It Has Begun

Alright folks, your patience (or lack there of) has paid off.  The first episode of The Phoenix Imperative has arrived!  And this happened after more hours, screw-ups and cursing than I cared for.

The episode was originally posted on the FO3 Nexus Image Share earlier today, and much to my dismay, the comic was a mess visually.  I forced myself to get it completed before I headed off to bed Friday night/Saturday morning.  By the time I was finished, I had been awake for around 20 hours.  This left me too tired to notice the mistakes I made in editing, and too tired to properly revue the completed work before I uploaded it.  It was still met with much enthusiasm, to my delight, but I was not happy with it being as broken as it was.

I reviewed the strip itself and went over my editing process in my head and found out where I messed up.  Thankfully, I still had the comic-edited versions of the stills, so I loaded them back in the editor, fixed there sizing, re-stacked them and then compressed the whole strip by 15%.  I think that it looks rather good now, given the limits of my graphics card.  What do you think of it?

  1. Art, or any other creativity, cannot -- must not -- be rushed. It must be allowed to flow forth naturally, whether it be a raging river or a gentle stream.

You've already seen what happens to me when I get excited and try to finish things before they're ready to be finished...

  2. Yes I have, but I still say I liked the Devistator the way you had it originally ;)

This bit with the first episode is also a result of rushing things. I was already a week behind the schedule I set for myself, and wanted to get it uploaded before I called it a night. As it turns out, if I had just put it aside for the night and come back to it the next day, it would have been uploaded around the time that I uploaded the re-edit. Live and learn...I hope >.<

...I'd love to tell you, but I can't read it? I'm not sure if it's an issue with my version of Firefox or what, but the size is showing at 185x1600px. I even downloaded it, thinking it might have been some kind of compression issue with Firefox's auto-resize, but it came out the same.

Don't know about anyone else, but I can't come close to reading the text, even with my glasses on.

Is it supposed to be that size?

  4. @Nos:

The problem does not appear to be isolated to you or Firefox. Using Chrome, the re-sized version was just as illegible, so I saved the image and opened it with Paint.NET then blew it up to 500%. It would then have been magnified enough to read if it weren't pixellated beyond recognition.

    @Druuler:

My friend, I hate being the bearer of bad tidings, but I'm afraid you still need to work a bit on whatever methods you are using to process these images.

Feel free to e-mail me for advice and I'll help in whatever ways I am able.

Well, sure... I mean, if you want to be all boring and practical about it...

  6. Ok, I'm more than a little confused and annoyed at what happened to the uploaded comic. It is quite obvious that something happened in its upload here at the blog. I just checked the copy on MegaPix, and it is about the correct size, but very fuzzy. The re-edited version on the Nexus is in the same condition as it is on my computer, so that worked well. The copy posted on DeviantArt is fine also. Guess I will have to go check the posting on f3Underground as now.

This time around, I would have to say that it isn't my editing that is the problem. Something when wrong during the uploading to blogspot and Mega. I'll see about re-uploading the copy on Mega. Hopefully it will turn out correctly this time. I might just start posting an off-site link for future episode postings here.

  7. Do you upload with Picasa?

You have to watch that thing -- it likes to "convert" images to what it considers better sizes for sharing.

  8. Sorry, I mean specifically the downloaded Picasa software; as opposed to the web interface. Just remembered that's the name of the service, too.

  9. Perhaps Blogger has a size limitation on image uploads? Most of my Doom pics are 1280x720 because, well, it's not exactly high-res to begin with...

When uploading images to my blog (and I think Nos does this as well) I always upload them to Picasa first and then add them to the post from there. So far it has worked well, although I know at least one of my posts is missing all its screenshots now because I deleted the pics from my HD not realizing that the next time I ran Picasa the auto-sync would delete them from there as well. Live and learn...

    But fools seldom differ.

...Sorry, I've been waiting years to use that come-back. I couldn't resist.

    *ahem*

    Anyway.

The reason I use the Picasa download-software (aside from being able to upload more than five files in a go) is because the web interface auto-resizes stuff. Or at least it used to. Whereas the software has a little drop-down menu on the upload box -- the one where you pick the folder you want to upload to -- that lets you select a conversion size. Just pick "original" and it won't screw up your work.

While it's not an option for my screenshots (I only play in 1024x768 since it keeps my crappy PC from es'ploding), a lot of my gun photos were originally taken in 2048x1536, and if I don't keep an eye on it, the damned program likes to cut them way down to save space.

And yeah, I keep auto-sync turned off, and only upload what I want. Those do it for you options seem to cause too many issues...

  11. Well, I can see what it is you two are doing this evening, err, morning now ;)

Anyway, my uploading to the blog is done just through the interface in the blog editor. Might be that is the problem. The strip is a rather large monster, having 14 seperate panels in its make up. Might try uploading a smaller episode at a later time, assuming that I end up with a smaller one O.o

  12. Well, I can't speak for Herculine, but I'm still reading Bromont threads, and listening to trance music.

The bit about uploading pictures was just a small break, you see.

  13. I multitask.

Heck, if I run everything in little windows, I can play Doom, watch an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, DL stuff and keep an eye on my inbox all at the same time...

  14. I was just suggesting that, based upon your fast responses, you both were spending the night in front of the computer...same as I was ;)
